Practice Questions

Q1. For the sentence given below, choose the most appropriate answer in reported speech from the options below: Ravi said, "My mother is going to her home town."

A Ravi said that his mother will go to her home town.
B Ravi said that his mother has gone to her home town.
C Ravi said that his mother was going to her home town. Correct
D Ravi said that his mother had gone to her home town.

Explanation

The reporting verb is in the past tense, so the present continuous form "is going" normally changes to the past continuous form "was going" in reported speech. The pronoun also changes from "my mother" to "his mother", because Ravi is the speaker being reported. "Will go" wrongly changes the tense and meaning to future simple. "Has gone" and "had gone" both suggest that the journey has already been completed, while the original sentence says the mother was in the process of going.

Q2. Choose the most appropriate reported form of the given sentence: He said to him, "Is your name not Robin?"

A He inquired whether his name was not Robin. Correct
B He asked if the name was Robin.
C He said that wasn't his name Robin.
D He asked if my name was Robin.

Explanation

The direct sentence is a yes-no interrogative addressed by one person to another: "Is your name not Robin?" In reported speech, "said to" changes to "inquired" or "asked", the question form becomes statement order, and "your" changes according to the person addressed, so "his name" fits. The negative sense is also retained through "was not". "He asked if the name was Robin" drops the possessive reference and the negative. "He said that wasn't his name Robin" is ungrammatical. "My name" wrongly shifts the reference to the reporter.

Q3. Choose the most appropriate reported form of the sentence given: He said to us, "Don’t walk on ice; it isn’t safe."

A He said not to walk on ice as its not safe.
B He warned us not to walk on ice as it wasn’t safe. Correct
C He ordered us not to walked on ice as it weren’t safe.
D He told us to avoid walking on ice as it isn’t safe.

Explanation

In reported speech, a direct warning with “Don’t” is best changed to “warned us not to” followed by the base verb. The present form “isn’t” normally backshifts to “wasn’t” after the past reporting verb “said”. “He said not to” is incomplete and also has the error “its” for “it’s”. “He ordered us not to walked” is grammatically wrong because “to” must take the base verb. “He told us to avoid” conveys a similar meaning but does not preserve the warning as accurately and keeps “isn’t” unshifted.
