Practice questions
Q1Choose the most appropriate option to fill in the blank: The police officer stopped us and asked us where _________.
This is an indirect question inside the larger sentence "asked us where...". In indirect questions, English uses normal statement order: subject before verb. Because the reporting verb "asked" is in the past, the tense also shifts to past: "we were going". "Were we going" is direct-question order and is unsuitable after "asked us where". "Are we going" is both direct-question order and present tense. "We are going" has the correct order, but its present tense does not match the past reporting context.
