India on 7 May 2026 commemorated the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, the 96-hour tri-service strike launched on 7 May 2025 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack of 22 April 2025. To mark the anniversary, the Ministry of Defence released figures showing that total defence exports in financial year 2025-26 reached Rs 38,424 crore, a year-on-year surge of 62.6 per cent. Between July 2025 and March 2026, fresh export orders worth Rs 24,000 crore were booked, driven primarily by the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, the Akash-NG air defence system, indigenous loitering munitions, and the Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control platform. For the first time, the private defence sector contributed nearly half of total exports at Rs 17,352 crore, a 54 per cent year-on-year growth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Operation Sindoor showcased the growing jointness among the Indian Armed Forces and underlined the strength that India's quest for self-reliance in the defence sector has brought to national security. The operation had eliminated over a hundred terrorists, neutralised 13 Pakistani aircraft and degraded eleven airfields, and demonstrated the air-launched BrahMos missile's ability to penetrate sophisticated defences. The Defence Ministry has approved acquisitions worth Rs 6.81 lakh crore in the past year, including emergency procurements for drones, anti-drone systems, precision munitions and secure communications.
