India recorded its highest-ever foodgrain production of 357.73 million tonnes in the agricultural year 2024-25, reflecting a growth of nearly 8 percent over the previous year. Agriculture and allied activities continue to be the backbone of the Indian rural economy, contributing approximately 16 percent to India's GDP in FY 2024-25 and providing livelihoods to more than 46 percent of the population. This achievement underscores the resilience of Indian agriculture despite climate variability.

As of August 2025, ₹3.90 lakh crore had been transferred to over 11 crore farmers through 20 installments under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi. India also retained its position as the world's largest milk producer, with output crossing 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24, accounting for nearly one-fourth of global milk production. Fisheries production reached 195 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. Food processing exports crossed USD 49.4 billion as of July 2025, reflecting strong growth in value addition and agri-exports, reinforcing India's emerging role as a global food basket.
