The 23rd installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme was released on 20 June 2026 at Tarakeswar in Hooghly district of West Bengal. Under this installment, more than Rs 18,880 crore was transferred as direct financial assistance to over 9.44 crore eligible farmers, including over 2.18 crore women farmers. More than 1 crore farmers participated in the programme online, and the day was also observed as "PM Kisan Utsav Diwas". The funds were transferred through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and eliminating intermediaries. PM-KISAN is a centrally sponsored scheme launched on 24 February 2019 to provide assured income support to landholding farmer families with cultivable land. Each eligible family receives Rs 6,000 per year, paid in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 directly into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. Since its launch in 2019, over Rs 4.46 lakh crore has been disbursed across 23 installments, making PM-KISAN one of the world's largest DBT initiatives. The Union Budget 2026-27 has allocated Rs 60,000 crore for the scheme. By December 2025, a total of Rs 416.75 crore had been recovered from ineligible beneficiaries. Alongside the installment, West Bengal saw the launch of new agricultural initiatives including crop insurance schemes, the Digital Agriculture Mission's AgriStack, the National Natural Farming Mission and the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana. A 2022 study by Allahabad University found beneficiary farms recorded 3.08% higher paddy yield, 1.93% higher wheat yield and 9.85% higher net farm income than non-beneficiaries.
