The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the 2nd Advance Estimates of area and production of horticulture crops for 2025-26, compiled from information received from States/Union Territories and other government source agencies. The total horticulture area for 2025-26 is estimated at about 301.51 lakh hectares, which is 0.14 lakh hectares (0.05%) higher than 2024-25 (final) figure of 301.36 lakh hectares. Total horticulture production is estimated at about 3777.76 lakh tonnes, an increase of 70.39 lakh tonnes (1.90%) over 2024-25 (final). Production has risen across fruits, vegetables, flowers and aromatic & medicinal plants. Fruit production rose from 1176.49 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 to 1214.75 lakh tonnes in 2025-26, an increase of 38.26 lakh tonnes (3.25%), led by banana, mango, papaya, apple and guava. Vegetable area increased from 117.91 to 118.79 lakh hectares (0.75%), while vegetable production is projected to rise from 2177.97 to 2210.00 lakh tonnes (1.47%). Onion area is expected to grow 2.31% to 20.14 lakh hectares, with onion production estimated at 307.37 lakh tonnes against 307.67 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. Potato production is estimated at 598.89 lakh tonnes (up 2.25%) and tomato at 214.61 lakh tonnes (up 4.19%). Flower production is projected to rise about 7.47% to 45.84 lakh tonnes, while spices area is estimated to reach 50.00 lakh hectares with production of 126.55 lakh tonnes.
