Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on 1 June 2026 launched the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Farm Campaign) from Ramsiya village in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi call to reduce excessive chemical fertiliser use and restore soil health. The month-long campaign will run till 30 June 2026 and the minister himself will tour states visiting farms and interacting directly with farmers to promote balanced fertiliser use, soil health management, natural farming, organic inputs and alternatives such as nano urea, nano DAP and bio-fertilisers. The campaign emphasises soil testing-based judicious application of NPK, integrated use of green manures, organic manures and bio-products, and adoption of climate-resilient cropping practices. For Kharif 2026, fertiliser requirement is estimated at 390.54 lakh metric tonnes against current availability of 200.47 LMT or about 51 per cent of need; about 122.4 LMT additional has been arranged through imports and domestic production following the West Asia crisis review. India imports nearly 70 per cent of urea and 100 per cent of potash, mainly from Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Jordan and Iran, exposing the country to global price volatility and shipping risks. Linked initiatives include the National Mission on Natural Farming, the PM-PRANAM scheme to incentivise states reducing chemical fertiliser use, and the Soil Health Card. The campaign aligns with the 2026 Kharif national target of 360 million tonnes foodgrain production set at the National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif at Pusa on 28 May 2026.
