In March 2026, the Rajasthan Department of Agriculture signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IORA Ecological Solutions to implement an Agricultural Land Management Carbon Project in the state. The announcement was made by Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Kirodi Lal Meena. The pilot project targets farmers in three blocks — Bansur (Alwar district), Mahua (Dausa district), and Malpura (Tonk district) — who will be supported to adopt sustainable farming practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon, thereby generating tradeable carbon credits.

Under the arrangement, enrolled farmers will receive carbon payments from buyers in voluntary and compliance carbon markets, providing an additional income stream over and above conventional agricultural earnings. The initiative aligns with the Union Budget 2026-27 which announced a ₹20,000 crore Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) support programme. IORA Ecological Solutions — a specialized environmental consultancy — will provide technical support, measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) services, and aggregate the credits through farmer-producer organisations (FPOs).

This is a significant step for Rajasthan, where arid and semi-arid soils have historically been degraded by intensive cultivation, deforestation, and overgrazing. Practices eligible for carbon credits include zero-till farming, agroforestry, mulching, cover cropping, and drip irrigation-based precision agriculture — all of which have direct relevance for Rajasthan's water-scarce agricultural landscape.
