The Department of Atomic Energy said on 29 April 2026 that a 15-member Indian delegation represented the country at the 10th review meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, held from 13 to 24 April 2026 at the International Atomic Energy Agency headquarters in Vienna. The delegation was led by A. K. Balasubrahmanian, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, and included experts from the regulator, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and the Embassy of India in Vienna. The meeting marked 30 years of the Convention and was attended by delegations from 86 countries.

India presented a country report on its nuclear power programme, with emphasis on safety performance, regulatory practices and future plans. The presentation underlined India’s commitment to nuclear safety and its engagement with the global nuclear safety community while pursuing large-scale expansion of nuclear power capacity. Indian delegates also discussed contemporary safety questions, participated in reviews of other country presentations and shared perspectives on common challenges.

The release recalled that India ratified the Convention on Nuclear Safety on 31 March 2005. The legally binding framework aims to sustain a high level of nuclear safety worldwide by building robust defences at nuclear installations against radiological hazards, protecting people, society and the environment from ionising radiation, and preventing or mitigating accidents. For countries operating nuclear power plants, the Convention covers obligations linked to siting, design, construction and operation. It also allows comparison of regulatory practices and safety standards against international best practices, making peer review an important part of nuclear governance.
