On February 14, 2026, Andhra Pradesh's Budget Session 2026 commenced with the launch of a groundbreaking AI-powered facial recognition attendance system, making the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly the first legislature in India to adopt this technology. The initiative was announced by Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu.

The system uses specialised Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras installed inside the Assembly chamber. Attendance is recorded only when a member is physically seated in their designated seat, preventing the earlier practice of legislators signing attendance registers and leaving without participating in proceedings. The system also tracks duration of presence, detecting late arrivals and early departures. The traditional manual register-based attendance system stands fully discontinued. The move aims to enhance legislative accountability, transparency, and democratic participation. It reflects a broader national trend of deploying artificial intelligence in governance — complementing similar innovations such as Andhra Pradesh's earlier AI-based student attendance rollout and the Union Government's emphasis on AI in public sector governance under the IndiaAI Mission.
