NITI Aayog released a landmark integrated scenario study titled "Viksit Bharat & Net Zero 2070," representing India's first government-led quantitative pathway analysis that simultaneously addresses the twin national goals of becoming a developed nation by 2047 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

The comprehensive study was informed by ten inter-ministerial working groups and will be published in 11 separate reports, with the first three installments scheduled for release on February 9, 2026. The study covers critical sectors including energy, industry, agriculture, and land use, and employs rigorous modelling to map out credible transition pathways under various scenarios.

The initiative marks a significant shift in India's climate and development planning. Unlike earlier qualitative commitments, this study provides quantitative milestones — year-by-year trajectories for emissions reduction, renewable energy deployment, industrial decarbonization, and agricultural transformation — all aligned with Viksit Bharat 2047 macroeconomic targets.

By involving 11 ministries in a unified framework, the study ensures cross-sectoral coherence. The energy sector pathway includes modelling for coal phase-down timelines, green hydrogen scale-up, and the role of nuclear energy. The agriculture component addresses methane emissions from rice cultivation and enteric fermentation, while the land-use module integrates carbon sinks from forests and wetlands.

The publication of this study is expected to serve as the technical backbone for India's next Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) update under the Paris Agreement, as well as informing domestic policy instruments such as the carbon market framework, production-linked incentives for clean technology, and green infrastructure financing.

For RPSC aspirants, this study is significant at multiple levels: it embodies cooperative federalism in environmental governance, demonstrates India's long-term strategic planning capacity, and provides a template for state-level climate action plans, including Rajasthan's own solar and desert ecosystem conservation priorities.
