The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Down To Earth magazine released their flagship annual publication — the State of India's Environment (SoE) 2026 report — at the Anil Agarwal Dialogue 2026 held on February 25, 2026. The report presents a comprehensive assessment of India's environmental status and reveals alarming trends in climate change impacts and ecological degradation. Among the most striking findings, India experienced extreme weather events on 331 out of 334 days in 2025 — approximately 99% of all days had at least one extreme weather event somewhere in the country. At least 4,419 people lost their lives due to extreme weather events in 2025, marking a sharp increase over previous years. The report warns that 7 of the 9 planetary boundaries have been breached due to human activities, with ocean acidification now emerging as the seventh breached boundary. The other six include climate change, biosphere integrity, land system change, freshwater depletion, biogeochemical flows, and novel entities. The 2026 edition covers critical themes including floods in a changing climate, the intersection of poverty and environment, the role of artificial intelligence in environmental management, depopulation trends, and youth engagement with environmental issues. The report calls for urgent policy action to strengthen climate adaptation, accelerate the transition to clean energy, protect biodiversity, and integrate environmental sustainability into India's development planning. It serves as an important reference document for policymakers, researchers, and civil society organisations working on environmental and climate issues in India.
