As of October 22, 2025, India's Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has provided safe tap water connections to over 15.72 crore rural households, covering more than 81% of rural homes nationwide. Launched in August 2019 with the goal of 'Har Ghar Jal', the mission has been extended to December 2028 (JJM 2.0) to certify all Gram Panchayats as 'Har Ghar Jal' by covering all 19.36 crore rural households. The Union Cabinet approved restructuring with an enhanced total outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore (central share ₹3.59 lakh crore), a significant increase from the original ₹2.08 lakh crore (2019). The revamped mission shifts focus from infrastructure creation to service delivery and introduces the 'Sujalam Bharat' digital framework, assigning each village a unique Sujal Gaon/Service Area ID. In Rajasthan, Bothara village saw a 70-foot rise in groundwater levels after JJM-funded water conservation works.
