As India commemorated Vijay Diwas on December 16, 2025, special attention was drawn to Rajasthan's pivotal role in the Western Front of the 1971 India-Pakistan War. While the Eastern Front (now Bangladesh) saw Pakistan's decisive surrender, the Western Front in Rajasthan witnessed significant military engagements in the districts of Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Bikaner — all sharing the India-Pakistan border. In the Barmer sector, Indian forces conducted the daring Chhachhro Raid, a cross-border operation into Sindh (then West Pakistan), with crucial intelligence support from local civilians including Thakur Balwant Singh of Bakhasar village. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled Thakur Balwant Singh's statue in Barmer district in December 2025, honouring this unsung civilian hero. In the Jaisalmer sector, the Battle of Longewala (December 4–5, 1971) became one of the most celebrated engagements of the war, where a small company of the 23rd Punjab Regiment, supported by the Indian Air Force's Hawker Hunter aircraft, repelled a massive Pakistani armoured column. The battle was later immortalised in the 1997 Bollywood film 'Border'. These engagements demonstrate the critical strategic importance of Rajasthan's border districts in India's national defence architecture. The Thar Desert's terrain posed unique logistical challenges for both sides, and the Indian Army's adaptability to desert warfare conditions was a key factor in the campaign's success.
