On September 7, 2025, a 50-foot breach appeared in the Ghaggar River dam in Sri Ganganagar district, Rajasthan, causing water to spread across approximately 150 acres of agricultural land. Cotton and rice crops standing in the fields were endangered by the flood water. Repair efforts were hampered due to lack of access caused by the flooding itself. Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Premchand Bairwa had earlier directed the district administration to remain on 24-hour alert given heavy rainfall and potential flood situations across the state. The Ghaggar River, also known as the 'Sorrow of Punjab and Rajasthan', is a seasonal river that flows through Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan and is known for periodic flooding during the monsoon. The Sri Ganganagar district's agriculture — particularly its cotton belt — is vital to Rajasthan's farm economy.
