The official Geographical Indications (GI) Registry lists application 1143 for 'Fringes of the Thar Desert and Nagori Ashwagandha' as Registered, with a certificate document dated 24-11-2025; January 2026 reports described 'Nagauri Ashwagandha' as Rajasthan's 22nd GI-certified product. Nagaur district in the Marwar region of Rajasthan is uniquely suited for Ashwagandha cultivation due to its dry climate and sandy soil, which produces roots that are longer, thicker, and rich in medicinal compounds — particularly alkaloids and withanolides. The withanolide content is a key active pharmaceutical component that gives Ashwagandha its renowned adaptogenic and medicinal properties. The GI tag legally protects the 'Nagauri Ashwagandha' name, ensuring that no individual or organisation can misuse it in domestic or global markets, curbing adulteration and protecting the authenticity of the product. The certification is expected to significantly enhance farmers' income in Nagaur district and improve the export potential of Ashwagandha to global herbal medicine and nutraceuticals markets. After Sojat Mehendi (from Pali district), this is Rajasthan's second major GI achievement in the agricultural category. Rajasthan's other GI-tagged products include Bikaner Bhujia, Makrana Marble, Kota Doria, Sanganer Block Print, Jodhpuri Mojari, and Blue Pottery of Jaipur, among others. The GI tagging system in India is administered under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 by the Geographical Indications Registry under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This recognition is a milestone for Rajasthan's agriculture sector, connecting traditional cultivation knowledge with modern intellectual property protection.
