The Government of India implemented the sixth phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery, adding seven districts: Rupnagar (Punjab), Banda (UP), Beed (Maharashtra), Gomati (Tripura), Katihar (Bihar), Beawar (Rajasthan), and Neemuch (MP), taking the total to 380 districts.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) reported that over 60 crore gold items have been hallmarked with a unique Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number between July 1, 2021 and March 5, 2026. Mandatory hallmarking ensures purity of gold jewellery and protects consumer interests. Gold jewellery of 14, 18, 20, 22, 23, and 24 carat grades can be hallmarked.
