Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the National Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Data Management System (NIDMS) of the National Security Guard (NSG) through video conferencing from New Delhi on January 9, 2026. NIDMS is a secure national digital platform that stores, standardises, and analyses all IED and bomb-blast related data in India since 1999, providing investigators across the country with single-click access to decades of forensic intelligence. The system is designed to strengthen India's counter-terrorism infrastructure by enabling faster, data-driven investigations of IED incidents. It allows law enforcement agencies, forensic labs, and counter-terrorism units to cross-reference blast site evidence, explosive materials used, detonation mechanisms, and suspect profiles across multiple incidents — helping identify patterns, networks, and repeat methods of operation used by terror groups. The NSG, commonly known as the 'Black Cats', is India's premier counter-terrorism force established in 1984 under the NSG Act, 1986, operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs. NIDMS is part of India's broader effort to modernise its internal security architecture using digital tools. The platform's data standardisation features are expected to improve coordination between the NIA (National Investigation Agency), state police bomb disposal squads, and central forensic science laboratories. IEDs have been used in several major terror attacks in India, including the 1993 Bombay blasts, 2008 Mumbai attacks, and multiple incidents in Jammu & Kashmir. The launch is significant for Rajasthan as well — the state's proximity to the Pakistan border makes counter-terrorism preparedness a critical concern.
