The Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth frigate INS Taragiri (F41) on April 3, 2026, at Visakhapatnam in a ceremony presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. INS Taragiri is the fourth ship in the Navy's Project 17A (Nilgiri-class) series, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. The warship displaces 6,670 tonnes and features a sharply reduced radar cross-section. It is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system and carries supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, and an Anti-Submarine Warfare suite integrated through a Combat Management System. With indigenous content exceeding 75%, over 200 MSMEs have contributed to the ship under India's Aatmanirbharta initiative. The ship was delivered to the Navy on November 28, 2025. Three earlier Project 17A ships — INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, and INS Udaygiri — have already been commissioned. Three more hulls are under construction at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, with the full class of seven ships expected to form a core of the Navy's blue-water surface force.
