The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Pune-based Bharat Forge Limited for the procurement of 12 marine gas turbine generator sets of 1.25 MW each for the Indian Navy, at a total cost of approximately Rs 425 crore. These generators incorporate a minimum of 60 percent indigenous content. The contract was signed under the 'Buy (Indian)' category on 19 June 2026 in New Delhi, in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh. The project further strengthens the government's commitment towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India under a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem. It will enhance self-reliance in the maritime domain in critical strategic technologies and will strengthen the operational readiness of the Indian Navy through indigenous production and complete life-cycle support. The contract marks an important step towards establishing indigenous capability in the manufacture of marine gas turbine generators. These generator sets form the backbone of modern naval warships and are used in power-generation applications that power critical combat systems, advanced weapons and sensors. By building domestic capacity in such critical strategic technologies, the initiative reduces dependence on external sources and supports the long-term sustainment of naval platforms. The move reflects the broader push towards indigenisation of defence equipment and the development of a self-reliant maritime industrial base in India.
