The Indian Navy commissioned INS Malwan, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), strengthening India''s coastal defence capabilities against submarine threats. Named after the historic port town of Malwan in Maharashtra, the vessel is designed to detect and neutralize submarine threats in shallow coastal waters where conventional anti-submarine vessels face operational limitations.

INS Malwan is equipped with state-of-the-art sonar systems, advanced torpedo launchers, and modern electronic warfare capabilities. The craft is optimized for operations in littoral zones — the shallow waters near the coastline — where submarine detection is particularly challenging due to complex acoustic environments.

The commissioning addresses a critical gap in India''s naval defence architecture. With increasing submarine activity in the Indian Ocean Region by various navies, India requires robust ASW capabilities across all water depths. INS Malwan complements the Navy''s deep-water ASW assets, creating a layered defence capability from coastal to blue-water operations.
