On October 14, 2025, the UN General Assembly elected India as one of 14 new members to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2026. India was elected unopposed, marking its seventh tenure on the global human rights body.

The other 13 countries elected alongside India include Angola, Britain, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, and Vietnam. India has been a member of the Council almost continuously since its creation in 2006, except for mandatory breaks in 2011, 2018, and 2025. The UNHRC, based in Geneva, comprises 47 members elected for staggered three-year terms.
