Practice questions
Q1A warehouse clerk evaluates 48 ÷ 6 + 5 × 3 − 4 for the daily ledger. What result should be entered?
Apply BODMAS: first divide and multiply, then add and subtract. 48 ÷ 6 = 8 and 5 × 3 = 15, so the expression becomes 8 + 15 − 4. That simplifies to 23 − 4 = 19.
Q2A packing line's shift rating is given by 120 ÷ 5 of 3 + 8 × 4 − 16. What integer rating does the formula produce?
Under BODMAS, 'of' is done before division: 5 of 3 = 15, so 120 ÷ 15 = 8. Then 8 × 4 = 32. The expression is 8 + 32 − 16 = 24.
Q3Along a highway stretch, a patrol car covers 3/7 of the distance before noon and then 2/5 of the remaining distance after noon. What fraction of the full stretch is still left?
After covering 3/7, the unfinished part is 4/7. Afternoon travel is (2/5) × (4/7) = 8/35. The stretch still left is 4/7 − 8/35 = 20/35 − 8/35 = 12/35.
Q4Of a ₹3600 travel grant, 5/12 is reserved for lodging and 1/3 for meals. By how many rupees does the lodging allotment exceed the amount left for local transport?
Lodging is (5/12) × 3600 = ₹1500 and meals are (1/3) × 3600 = ₹1200. The transport remainder is 3600 − 1500 − 1200 = ₹900. Lodging exceeds that remainder by 1500 − 900 = ₹600.
Q5A cylindrical storage drum is 2/5 full. After 45 litres are poured in, it stands 7/10 full. What is the drum's full capacity?
Let capacity be C litres. Then (2/5)C + 45 = (7/10)C. So 45 = (7/10 − 2/5)C = (7/10 − 4/10)C = (3/10)C. Hence C = 45 × (10/3) = 150 litres.
