The National Geoscience Awards 2024 are important for exam preparation because they connect science, mineral resources, governance and sustainable development. On 26 September 2025, President Droupadi Murmu presented these awards at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, New Delhi. A total of 20 eminent geoscientists were honoured with 12 awards. The awards recognise outstanding contributions to geological and mineral sciences, especially mineral discovery, exploration, fundamental and applied geosciences, mining and allied areas.

The institutional background is useful for static GK. The National Geoscience Awards were instituted in 1966 by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. Until 2009, they were known as the National Mineral Awards. For 2024, the awards were given under three categories: National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement, National Geoscience Award and National Young Geoscientist Award. The Ministry received 208 nominations, and after a three-stage screening process, 12 awards were finalised, including 9 individual awards and 3 team awards.

For prelims, direct questions may be asked on the founder ministry, year of institution, award categories, venue, date and number of awardees. For RAS and UPSC-style papers, the topic also links current affairs with Indian governance and resource management. From a mains perspective, its relevance lies in mineral resource management, scientific research, sustainable mining and better use of natural resources. Minerals are basic resources for India’s economy and industrial development, so the work of geoscientists is not just an awards update; it is connected with development policy and environmental balance.
