Varanasi achieved a Guinness World Record on March 1, 2026, by planting 2,51,446 saplings in just one hour, surpassing China's previous record of 1.53 lakh saplings. The mega plantation drive was conducted at the Sujabad-Domari area on the banks of the Ganga River using the Miyawaki plantation technique.

Organised by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, around 20,000 participants including volunteers, students, defence personnel, and government officials took part. The record was verified using drone monitoring and digital counting systems by Guinness adjudicator Rishi Nath. The plantation covers around 350 bighas and will be developed into an urban forest named 'Namo Van'.
