The Government of India launched the SATHI (Seed Authentication, Traceability and Holistic Inventory) digital traceability system to curb widespread seed fraud threatening agricultural output and GI-tagged crops like Basmati rice. Of 2.53 lakh seed samples tested in 2024-25, 32,525 were found substandard. An amendment to the Seeds Act, 1966 has been proposed to mandate quality certification. India's seed industry, currently valued at $6.3 billion, is projected to reach $20 billion by 2040. Rajasthan is among the states that reported significant seed fraud cases, threatening the livelihoods of farmers across arid and semi-arid regions.
