French President Emmanuel Macron's official visit to India from February 17–19, 2026 resulted in the elevation of bilateral ties to a 'Special Global Strategic Partnership' with a 2047 roadmap. The two countries exchanged 21 agreements spanning defence, critical minerals, renewable energy, AI, and nuclear energy.

The most significant outcome was India's Defence Acquisition Council granting Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) on February 12, 2026 for the procurement of 114 Rafale Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) for the Indian Air Force at an estimated cost of ₹3.25 lakh crore (approximately $36–38 billion). Of the 114 aircraft, 18 will be delivered in fly-away condition from France and 96 will be manufactured in India under the Make in India framework, with indigenous content expected to reach 60% over time. PM Modi and President Macron also virtually inaugurated India's first private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the Airbus H125 at Vemagal, Karnataka, set up by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) in partnership with Airbus.

The two nations agreed to co-develop Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) with France's EDF to support India's target of 100 GW nuclear energy capacity. India and France also launched the '2026 Year of Innovation' focusing on AI, healthcare, and sustainability. A visa-free transit facility for Indian nationals through French airports was agreed for a 6-month pilot, and both nations set a target of 30,000 Indian students in France by 2030.
