The Union Cabinet approved the extension of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) up to December 2028 with an enhanced total outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore, including an additional central share of ₹1.51 lakh crore (taking central assistance from ₹2.08 lakh crore to ₹3.59 lakh crore). JJM 2.0 shifts from infrastructure creation to utility-based service delivery, introducing 'Sujalam Bharat' — a national digital framework assigning every village a unique Sujal Gaon/Service Area ID, digitally mapping the complete drinking water supply system from source to tap. Currently 15.80 crore of 19.36 crore rural households (81.6%) have tap water connections. The target is 100% coverage for all 19.36 crore households by December 2028.
