The Ministry of Education reported on May 5, 2026 that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated IIT Madras' first Technology Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Held under the theme 'From IITM. For Bharat. Building Together', the summit sought a collaborative framework among industry, academia and government to design, develop and deploy technologies for Viksit Bharat. Pradhan described IIT Madras as a research-driven and society-linked innovation institution that is strengthening public-purpose collaboration and India's deep-tech and frontier-research capacity. He cited the Government's Rs 1 lakh crore allocation for Research, Development and Innovation as a signal of intent to scale research capacity and translate knowledge into measurable outcomes. He said about 70% of research investment presently comes from Government, but the longer-term goal should be a more balanced 50:50 partnership between the public sector and industry. The Minister argued that innovation should be judged not only by citations, patents and IPOs, but by deployable products, scalable technologies and societal solutions. He linked this to Bharat Innovates, which brings Higher Education Institutions and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions to a global platform for deep-tech innovation. IIT Madras also announced strategic partnerships with NTPC Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and HSBC to establish dedicated research centres for healthcare technologies and a sustainable future. The summit exhibition showcased work from 15 Centres of Excellence under the Institute of Eminence framework in healthcare, sustainability, semiconductors, energy and advanced materials.
