On March 10, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the extension and restructuring of the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028, with total outlay enhanced to Rs. 8.69 lakh crore including central assistance of Rs. 3.59 lakh crore. The restructured JJM 2.0 institutes Sujalam Bharat, a national digital framework under which every village receives a unique Sujal Gaon or Service Area ID to map drinking-water supply from source to tap. It aims to provide tap water connections to all 19.36 crore rural households by December 2028. On March 17, 2026, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh signed reform-linked MoUs under JJM 2.0. Rajasthan's MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Jal Shakti C. R. Paatil, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Minister of State V. Somanna. The MoU covers 11 structural reform areas and provides for completed piped water supply schemes to be handed over through the Jal Arpan process. The Cabinet note also cited assessed impacts including 9 crore women freed from fetching water, a potential 1,36,000 under-five lives saved annually and 2.2 crore indirect person-years of employment.
