Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oslo, Norway, on 18 May 2026 on the fourth leg of his five-nation tour, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store received him at Gardermoen Airport in what was described as a historic moment for bilateral relations. During the visit, Modi was conferred the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, the highest civilian honour of Norway, making it his 32nd international honour. In bilateral talks held the same day, the two leaders agreed to elevate India-Norway relations to a Green Strategic Partnership, with focus areas covering trade and investment, green technology, the blue economy, clean energy, green hydrogen, critical minerals, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, maritime technology, sustainable shipping, supply chains and defence-related innovation. Norway is part of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which signed the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with India, under which EFTA committed an investment target of 100 billion US dollars in India over 15 years. Modi is scheduled to participate in the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on 19 May 2026, bringing together leaders of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. The visit deepens India's engagement with the resource-rich Nordic region and strengthens cooperation on energy security, climate action and emerging technologies, advancing India's broader strategic outreach to Europe.
