Indian Navy Receives INS Taragiri — Fourth Nilgiri-Class Stealth Frigate Under Project 17A
The Indian Navy received INS Taragiri on November 28, 2025 at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. It is the fourth Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) indigenous advanced stealth frigate and represents a major milestone in self-reliance in warship design and construction.
Key facts: built in 81 months (vs 93 months for the first ship INS Nilgiri), features 75% indigenous content, involved over 200 MSMEs, generated approximately 4,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs. The frigate is equipped with BrahMos missiles, MFSTAR radar, and CODOG propulsion plants. It is named after a former Leander-class frigate that served from 1980-2013. The ship is scheduled for commissioning on April 3, 2026 at Visakhapatnam. The remaining three P-17A ships are planned for delivery by August 2026.
