National Energy Conservation Day is observed every year on December 14 across India. In 2025, the event was held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu served as Chief Guest and conferred the 35th National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2025. The awards, organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, recognised industries and establishments across 28 sub-sectors spanning 7 categories — including a newly introduced category for Social Media Influencers and Digital Content Creators promoting energy conservation. In 2025, over 80 lakh students from 1,10,000 schools across India participated in the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation, underscoring the scale of grassroots energy literacy campaigns. The day traces its origins to 1991 when NECA was first instituted. India's energy efficiency journey has been powered by key interventions like the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme, UJALA LED programme, and STAR labelling. India has reduced its emission intensity by over 45% compared to 2005 levels — surpassing the NDC target ahead of schedule — partly due to gains in industrial energy efficiency. The Ministry of Power highlighted India's growing renewable energy capacity and its ambition to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030 as part of clean energy commitments under the Paris Agreement.
