INS Taragiri (F41) is a new stealth frigate of the Indian Navy. It was delivered to the Indian Navy by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai, on 28 November 2025 and was commissioned into the Navy at Visakhapatnam on 3 April 2026. The development matters for both defence and science-technology preparation because it reflects India’s growing capability in indigenous warship construction.

Taragiri is a Nilgiri-class Project 17A frigate. According to official information, it is the fourth ship of this class and the third ship built by Mazagon Dock. Project 17A frigates are designed as versatile multi-mission platforms for current and future challenges in the maritime domain. The Warship Design Bureau designed the ship, and the Warship Overseeing Team at Mumbai oversaw the construction. This links the current-affairs update with indigenous design, shipbuilding, and engineering capability within India’s naval ecosystem.

For examinations, the relevance is threefold. In prelims, questions may focus on the ship’s name, class, builder, delivery date, and commissioning location. In static GK, it connects with the Indian Navy, defence production, and self-reliance. In mains, it can be used as an example for indigenous defence manufacturing, maritime security, and the role of micro, small and medium enterprises. Official information mentions 75% indigenisation content, involvement of more than 200 MSMEs, and employment generation of about 4,000 personnel directly and more than 10,000 personnel indirectly. Therefore, this is not just a ship-delivery update; it is a current-affairs marker of India’s naval modernisation and self-reliant defence capacity.
