The Nobel Prize in Literature 2025 was awarded to Hungarian author Laszlo Krasznahorkai 'for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.' He is regarded as a great epic writer in the Central European tradition extending through Kafka to Thomas Bernhard, characterised by absurdism and grotesque excess.

Krasznahorkai is known for his long, hypnotic sentences and novels exploring themes of decay and the human condition. His major works include 'Satantango' (1985), 'The Melancholy of Resistance' (1989), and 'Baron Wenckheim's Homecoming' (2016). Several of his novels have been adapted into films by acclaimed director Bela Tarr.
