Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma announced the renaming of three cities in Rajasthan during the state assembly session on February 27, 2026. The decision, which gained wide coverage through the first week of March 2026, renames Mount Abu to Abu Raj, Jahazpur (Bhilwara district) to Yagyapur, and Kama (Bharatpur district) to Kamvan.

Mount Abu, Rajasthan's only hill station perched on the Aravalli Range at an altitude of approximately 1,220 metres, is a major tourist and pilgrimage destination. The Dilwara Temples — famed for their exquisite marble craftsmanship — and Nakki Lake are its iconic landmarks. The renaming to 'Abu Raj' is intended to restore the place's ancient identity rooted in Sanskrit etymology.

Jahazpur's renaming to 'Yagyapur' evokes its historical association with Vedic yagna traditions. The renaming of Kama to 'Kamvan' reflects the site's significance in Vaishnava pilgrimage geography, as it is associated with the ancient forest of Kamyavana in Braj region, a sacred site linked to Lord Krishna.

The Bhajanlal Sharma government has framed these renamings as part of restoring Rajasthan's cultural heritage and ancient identities. Critics have raised questions about administrative costs and priorities. The move follows similar renaming decisions in other BJP-governed states in recent years.
