On Sunday 24 May 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared on his X handle an article authored by Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M Scindia highlighting Sikkim journey of development as the Himalayan state entered its 51st year of statehood. In his post the Prime Minister referred to Khangchendzonga the worlds third highest peak as the protector of Sikkim land memory and consciousness while underlining the significance of the mountain in shaping the state identity and aspirations. The Prime Minister noted that the five treasures of Khangchendzonga continue to illuminate the state journey paving the way for Viksit Sikkim 2047. The article highlighted the launch of a 360 crore rupee Mission with support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region which seeks to elevate Sikkim from a certified organic producer to a globally integrated premium organic economy driven by world class infrastructure aggregation branding traceability and export market integration. The mission will strengthen farmer incomes empower Farmer Producer Organisations expand cold chain and logistics networks and impact more than 66000 farmer families across Sikkim. Sikkim achieved the milestone of becoming the first fully organic state of India in January 2016 and is now positioned to leverage that distinction commercially. The Prime Minister sharing of the article coincides with celebrations marking 51 years of Sikkim merger with the Indian Union on 16 May 1975 when it became the 22nd state of India under the 36th Constitutional Amendment Act 1975. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended the statehood day celebrations where 21 projects worth 223 crore rupees backed by MDoNER were inaugurated.
