Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched India's first cooperative-based taxi service, "Bharat Taxi", on 27 June 2026 from the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The initiative extends Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Sahkar se Samriddhi" (Prosperity through Cooperation) to the transport and mobility sector. Built on the principle of "Sarathi hi Malik" (the driver is the owner), Bharat Taxi is India's first driver-owned ride-hailing platform, under which drivers are not merely service providers but also participants and owners of the platform, gaining economic empowerment, social security and ownership benefits. The platform is operated by Sahkar Taxi Cooperative Limited in collaboration with eight major cooperatives — NCDC, GCMMF (Amul), NDDB, NAFED, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, NABARD and NCEL. Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, it was established on 6 June 2025 and soft-launched in Gujarat in December 2025. Bharat Taxi runs on a zero-commission and surge-free pricing model, ensuring maximum earnings reach drivers directly, who also receive insurance, loans, pension and government social-security benefits. Nationwide, over 7 lakh drivers and 37 lakh customers have joined, with more than 1.5 lakh drivers from Gujarat alone and over 3,500 rides completed daily. The service launches across 14 major Gujarat cities, with a target to cover the entire state within a month and eventually expand to all states and major cities.
