Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Ecuador's Minister of Foreign and Human Mobility Affairs Gabriela Sommerfeld jointly inaugurated the Resident Embassy of India in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, in November 2025. The two sides also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation between their diplomatic training institutions. The opening of the resident embassy marks a significant step in strengthening India-Ecuador bilateral relations. Ecuador is an important country in South America with growing trade ties with India, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, IT, and agriculture. The initiative is part of India's broader strategy to enhance diplomatic outreach in Latin America, a region increasingly important in global geopolitics, supply chains, and the Global South coalition under India's G20 and BRICS diplomacy framework.
