Around March 3–5, 2026, India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed two major procurement contracts worth a combined ₹5,083 crore (~USD 590 million) to boost the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy.

The first contract, valued at ₹2,901 crore, was signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for six Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk-III units in the Maritime Role (MR) configuration for the Indian Coast Guard. The ALH Mk-III is a twin-engine, multi-role helicopter designed and manufactured indigenously by HAL under the 'Make in India' initiative. Each helicopter comes with operational role equipment, an engineering support package, and performance-based logistics support — enhancing India's maritime surveillance and Search & Rescue (SAR) capabilities along its 7,500 km coastline.

The second contract, valued at ₹2,182 crore, was signed with JSC Rosoboronexport (Russia) for Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch (VL)–Shtil missile systems for the four follow-on Talwar-class frigates of the Indian Navy. These frigates use a vertically launched variant of the Shtil SAM compared to the arm-launched version on the original six frigates, significantly improving ship defence against aerial threats. The combined procurement addresses critical maritime capability gaps and reflects India's balanced approach to indigenous development and strategic imports.
