December 10, 2025 marked the 77th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Human Rights Day 2025 was observed globally under the UN's theme 'Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now', with a focus on addressing structural inequality, protecting digital rights in the age of artificial intelligence, and ensuring climate justice for vulnerable communities. In India, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) organised events highlighting the state of human rights across sectors including custodial deaths, bonded labour, tribal displacement, and digital privacy. The NHRC also released data showing that Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar consistently account for the highest number of human rights complaints in India. Civil society organisations used the occasion to highlight concerns about shrinking civic space, internet shutdowns, and the rights of marginalised communities including Dalits, Adivasis, and minorities. The day also drew attention to India's international commitments under the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), where India holds an elected seat, and the country's obligations under various ratified conventions including CEDAW, CRC, and the Convention Against Torture (though India has not ratified the last).
