On October 14, 2025, a private AC sleeper bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur caught fire near Thaiyat village, approximately 10 km from Jaisalmer. The fire was caused by a short circuit in the air-conditioning system — the bus had been illegally modified from non-AC to AC. A jammed emergency exit trapped passengers inside. Over 20 people died; the death toll later rose to 22. Prime Minister Modi announced ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. The Rajasthan government ordered a comprehensive safety audit of all private buses. Police arrested the driver, bus owner, and the person who had carried out the illegal modification. An SIT was constituted to probe safety lapses.
