The Indian Navy formally inducted and named the ancient stitched ship as INSV Kaundinya at Naval Base, Karwar, on 21 May 2025. The project was initiated through a July 2023 tripartite agreement between the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy and M/s Hodi Innovations. The vessel uses traditional stitched-plank techniques, built without welding or riveting, to revive and showcase India's ancient maritime craftsmanship on the global stage.
