On Tuesday, 14 April 2026, President of India Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar at Lok Bhavan, Gandhinagar, on the occasion of his 135th birth anniversary. The President graced the 'Samajik Samrasta Mahotsava' (Social Harmony Festival) organised at the Lok Bhavan, where she described Babasaheb as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and the foremost champion of social justice in modern Indian history. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and senior officials from the central and state governments joined her in paying homage. Later in the day, President Murmu attended the 5th convocation ceremony of Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), Gandhinagar, an Institution of National Importance under the Ministry of Home Affairs that prepares cadres in policing, internal security and strategic studies. The convocation conferred 563 degrees and diplomas across specialised national-security domains, and National Security Adviser Ajit Kumar Doval received an honorary doctorate. The visit formed part of the President's four-day tour of Gujarat and Maharashtra (13-16 April 2026), during which she also graced the first convocation of AIIMS Rajkot on 13 April and the sixth convocation of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya at Wardha on 16 April, alongside other academic and commemorative programmes. Across India, Ambedkar Jayanti was observed as a Central Government holiday under a Department of Personnel and Training (DoP&T) order issued on 9 April 2026, with central offices closed; bank closures varied locally rather than being uniform nationwide.
