In a historic first, the Indian Navy's sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at the port of Las Palmas in Spain on April 23, 2026 as part of her ongoing transoceanic deployment under the Lokayan 26 mission, with the Press Information Bureau confirming the development through an official release on April 24, 2026. The port call to the Canary Islands archipelago is significant as it marks the maiden visit of an Indian naval ship to the archipelago, deepening India's naval and people-to-people footprint in the eastern Atlantic. INS Sudarshini, a three-masted barque homeported at Kochi, sailed from Kochi in January 2026 and has undertaken successive port calls at Oman, Egypt, Malta, France and Morocco, spreading the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the World is One Family, that anchors India's outreach to friendly maritime nations. During the Las Palmas stay the Commanding Officer is scheduled to hold professional interactions with Spanish Naval authorities to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and the ship will be opened to visitors from the local Spanish community and the Indian diaspora. The Las Palmas stopover serves as a strategic pause before the ship begins her ambitious trans-Atlantic passage, after which she will sail to several ports in the United States to participate in the Sail 250 commemorative events organised as part of the United States 250th Independence Day celebrations. Lokayan 26 is one of the longest sail-training deployments undertaken by the Indian Navy and showcases India's growing blue-water reach and the role of sail training in officer and cadet development.
