Myanmar President Senior General U Min Aung Hlaing began a five day State visit to India on 30 May 2026, his first foreign trip as Head of State of Myanmar following the 2025 elections, signalling the strategic importance both countries attach to bilateral cooperation across trade, connectivity, border security and defence. The Myanmar leader landed in Gaya in Bihar and proceeded to the Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya to pay obeisance at the seat of the Buddhas enlightenment, underlining the deep civilisational and Buddhist heritage ties between India and Myanmar. He travelled onward to New Delhi for the substantive bilateral programme. On 1 June 2026 he is scheduled to hold detailed talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House, focused on consolidating Indias Act East and Neighbourhood First policies, accelerating the India Myanmar Thailand Trilateral Highway, the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project and the Sittwe port, addressing cross border insurgency along the Free Movement Regime border in Manipur Mizoram Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh and expanding defence training and equipment cooperation. A business forum will bring Indian industry leaders together with a Myanmar delegation of cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders. The President will then visit Mumbai on 2 June 2026 for industry interactions, site visits and investment outreach.
