Three Major Indian Ports Recognised as Green Hydrogen Hubs Under National Green Hydrogen Mission
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) recognised three major ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM): Deendayal Port Authority (Gujarat), V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (Tamil Nadu), and Paradip Port Authority (Odisha). These ports will serve as integrated centres for production, consumption, and export of green hydrogen.
V.O. Chidambaranar Port commissioned a ₹25 crore pilot project with 10 Nm3/hr capacity for applications like street lighting and EV charging. Deendayal Port commissioned a megawatt-scale indigenous facility (₹13 crore) with 140 metric tonnes annual capacity. Green Hydrogen Hubs aim to reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors like steel, cement, and shipping.

Frequently asked questions
What pilot project did V.O. Chidambaranar Port commission for green hydrogen?
**V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (Tamil Nadu) commissioned a ₹25 crore pilot project with 10 Nm3/hr capacity** for green hydrogen applications like street lighting and EV charging. It is one of three ports designated as Green Hydrogen Hubs under India's National Green Hydrogen Mission.
What facility did Deendayal Port commission for green hydrogen?
**Deendayal Port Authority (Gujarat) commissioned a megawatt-scale indigenous facility costing ₹13 crore with 140 metric tonnes annual capacity** for green hydrogen production. It is one of the three Green Hydrogen Hubs under India's National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Which hard-to-abate sectors will Green Hydrogen Hubs target?
**Green Hydrogen Hubs aim to reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors like steel, cement, and shipping.** These sectors are difficult to electrify directly, making hydrogen — which can replace fossil fuels without direct emissions — a key solution for industrial decarbonisation.
Where are India's three Green Hydrogen Hubs located?
India's three Green Hydrogen Hubs are: **Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Tamil Nadu, and Paradip Port Authority in Odisha.** These were recognised under the National Green Hydrogen Mission by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
What is green hydrogen and why is it important for India?
**Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by splitting water using renewable energy** (solar/wind) through electrolysis, with zero carbon emissions. It is important for India as a clean fuel for hard-to-abate sectors like steel and shipping, and to achieve India's target of net-zero emissions by 2070 and 5 million metric tonnes production by 2030.
