On December 23, 2025, the Delhi High Court suspended the sentence of former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in the 2017 Unnao rape case, and granted him conditional relief while his appeal remained pending. Sengar, born on 20 March 1966, was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for raping a minor girl in 2017 at his residence in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. The relief was sought as a suspension of sentence during the pendency of the appeal. The case had drawn national attention after the victim's father died in judicial custody and the victim was critically injured in a truck collision in 2019. Women's rights organisations condemned the order, and on December 29, 2025 the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order dated 23.12.2025 and directed that Sengar not be released pursuant to it.
