Indian Railways achieved 99.4% electrification of its broad-gauge network, with 69,744 out of 70,117 route kilometres electrified as of January 2026, making it the world's largest electrified rail network. The electrification pace accelerated from 1.42 km/day during 2004-14 to over 15 km/day during 2019-25.

India is the first major country to achieve near-100% broad-gauge railway electrification. Solar power capacity at railway stations has grown from 3.68 MW in 2014 to 898 MW by November 2025, with installations at 2,626 stations. The shift from diesel to electric traction is expected to save ₹18,000 crore annually in fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions by 3.5 million tonnes per year, contributing to India's net-zero 2070 target.
