The Forest Declaration Assessment 2025 report revealed that 8.1 million hectares of forest were lost globally in 2024, a level of destruction 63% higher than the trajectory needed to halt deforestation by 2030. Deforestation emitted 3.1 Gt CO2-equivalent, equalling 150% of US energy sector emissions. Agricultural expansion accounts for 86% of global deforestation.

Loss of humid primary tropical forests spiked in 2024, largely due to climate change-induced forest fires, with forest degradation affecting 8.8 million hectares. On the positive side, restoration efforts are expanding, with at least 10.6 million hectares hosting forest restoration projects worldwide. India has set a target to restore 26 million hectares by 2030 and spends over 30 times more domestically on forest protection than international aid received.
